VIP VACATIONS
DESTINATION: CALIFORNIA

"In our new column, we ask celebrities to reveal their most memorable holiday. This week it's TV presenter NICK KNOWLES on star-spotting in the USA

"Driving on a Harley-Davidson through the California desert, I watched the sun set over the red rocks as I sped through a narrow gap in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Back in May 2006 I'd been filming the BBC travel show Departure Lounge in Los Angeles, but before we'd even left the city for our next stop in Palm Springs, I'd lost the rest of the crew… along with my wallet and mobile phone.

I was travelling by motorbike and for five hours I'd

been cruising alone in the 49 degree C heat in my leathers, without a cent for fuel or water.

In the distance was a wind farm – the massive windmills were used in Mission: Impossible III – and in the magic of the moment, I wouldn't have wished myself anywhere else.

By the time I reached Palm Springs, I was so hot, I jumped straight into the pool of the Coral Sands Inn in all my biking gear. When I got out, one guy came over, introduced himself as Frankie, and offered me a drink.

He kept asking if I liked his wine, until I began to think he was angling for me to buy the next round. It wasn't until he handed me the bottle that I glanced at the label and saw the name – Francis Ford Coppola. The Oscar-winning director was sharing a bottle of wine from his own vineyard with me!

I spent the rest of the evening entertaining him with impressions of Russell Crowe in Gladiator. I still didn't get offered a part in one of his movies though!"

Coral Sands Inn has seven themed suites,
including The Liberace Suite
and The Yippy Ky Yo Ky Yay Rodeo Suite.
Rooms cost from £67 per night, or you can take over the whole resort for £537.

O, 'tis most sweet when in one line two crafts directly meet: Actor and Philanthropist Paul Newman

THE hunk of the 1950s and the man who most notably bridged the transition of movie actors from stiff recitative to full action emo, Paul Newman, has fallen to cancer. Where Cary Grant was affable and often adorable and Jimmy Stewart was iconic and lovable, Newman was HOT, HOT, HOT. When mixed with a writer like Tennessee Williams audiences of women erupted into flames. He was complex, vulnerable, angry, treacherous, gorgeous, wheedling one minute and sexually demanding the next and he found his perfect foil in JoAnne Woodward. If you haven't seen Long, Hot Summer in a while, go get it tonight in honor of Newman's passing. It sizzles.

You have to ask whether someone like Brad Pitt would even be possible if it weren't for Paul Newman. You could not take your eyes off him when he was on screen. He delved deeply into the psyche of his characters. Cool Hand Luke -- need we say more. It was impossible to eat a hard boiled egg for decades after seeing the flick. In the words of Franklin Roosevelt, he was "an asshole, but he's our asshole." And that's how we felt about Luke. God! How we cringed when he could not learn to look past his own ego and fell, time and time again, to the perdition of the sheriff. His spirit would not be broken and we clung to him for that, cheering him on and dying when he failed yet again.

His achievements as a philanthropist were quieter but no less effective. Famous for mixing up his own oil and vinegar salad dressing at home, friends persuaded him to market it. Now, hundreds of millions of dollars later, there are kids who can read because of him, places for them to play because of him, and the world, fragile and corrupt and weakened by greed, is stronger because of him.

.

The Coral Sands salutes a giant in Mr. Newman. We regret we were unable to find a single picture of Mr. Newman with his shirt on. ; )

An interesting read

From Andrew Sullivan's blog for The Atlantic

The Twelve Lies Of Sarah Palin

"Just for the record, I asked an intern to go back and double fact-check the twelve documented lies that Sarah Palin has told on the public record. These are not hyperbolic claims or rhetorical excess. They are assertions of fact that are demonstrably untrue and remain uncorrected. Every single one of the lies I documented holds up after several news cycles have had a chance to vet them even further.

I know the MSM demands that we move on from the fact that someone who could be president next January has a list of public lies so extensive and indisputable that the McCain campaign has still not been able to rebut or even address any one of them, while fencing her off from the press and refusing to hold a press conference to clear the air on so many murky questions of fact that get to the core of whether this person is fit to be vice-president or president.

So for the record, let it be known that the candidate for vice-president for the GOP is a compulsive, repetitive, demonstrable liar. If you follow the links, here is the proof. I repeat: proof:

- She has lied about the Bridge To Nowhere. She ran for office favoring it, wore a sweatshirt defending it, and only gave it up when the federal congress, Senator McCain in particular, went ballistic. She kept the money anyway and favors funding Don Young's Way, at twice the cost of the original bridge.

- She has lied about her firing of the town librarian and police chief of Wasilla, Alaska.

- She has lied about pressure on Alaska's public safety commissioner to fire her ex-brother-in-law.

- She has lied about her previous statements on climate change.

- She has lied about Alaska's contribution to America's oil and gas production.

- She has lied about when she asked her daughters for their permission for her to run for vice-president.

- She has lied about the actual progress in constructing a natural gas pipeline from Alaska.

- She has lied about Obama's position on habeas corpus.

- She has lied about her alleged tolerance of homosexuality.

- She has lied about the use or non-use of a TelePrompter at the St Paul convention.

- She has lied about her alleged pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla.

- She has lied about what Alaska's state scientists concluded about the health of the polar bear population in Alaska.

You cannot trust a word she says. On anything."

Palin Unveils 9/11 Firefighter Cousin, Reformed Lesbian Niece, Naturalized Mexican Half Brother

September 16, 2008 | Issue 44•38

CARBONDALE, PA—Less than two weeks after introducing to the nation her developmentally disabled newborn and her 19-year-old son preparing for military service in Iraq, Republican vice presidential nominee and conservative Christian woman Sarah Palin delivered a speech Monday flanked by three heretofore-unknown relatives, including a naturalized Mexican half brother, a formerly lesbian niece, and a New York City firefighter cousin who saved several lives during the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. "John McCain and I will take on the Washington establishment and give the government back to the people," said Palin, who several times gave the "thumbs-up" sign to her African-American coal-miner uncle seated in the audience. "We envision a better and brighter future for hardworking, selfless Americans like Ted, Anne, and Guillermo here." Palin has a campaign stop scheduled next week in Texas, where she is expected to introduce her stepsister Linda, a $35 barrel of offshore-drilled crude oil wrapped in an American flag.

Strange but True

A Special Report

Not since the dawning of the age of Aquarius, when Jupiter aligned with Mars, has there been a line up like this. That motelier you know and love flew out to Kansas City for a memorial honoring Mary Nastali, the mother of Vita, grandmother to godchildren, friend of many in Shawnee Mission, Kansas this weekend. Who should be crossing the State of Kansas today but, David and Brian, those newlyweds fresh from poolside services at the Coral Sands. (Yes! They are Still together!) Who'd a thought?

While Ruby was at the gathering in KC, the boyz were touring the "Garden of Eden" in Lucas, Kansas, that amazing art house and garden built and encrusted by outsider/grassroots artist S. P. Dinsmore. Check it out

The state of Kansas may never be the same again.

Vintage Sanders and Sanders Freshly Minted gather to celebrate

iWitnesses
Jeff and Brian Gaisford-Parker and Jack (Russell-Gaisford-Parker) virtually attended the wedding of Brian and David Brockowski by appearing magically on a laptop minutes before the nuptials

If you're not a friend of the Reverend Ruby Z Montana when you arrive at the Coral Sands, just wait a minute. The instantaneous combustion of love that took place here at the midnight wedding on Sunday was something to behold. Not only did two men join in LEGAL consensual bondage, (I hope they remembered to pick a "safe word"), but we welcomed some neophytes into that growing group of lovelies that we call "Sanders".

Reporting from the Coral Sands,
T.T.F.N. Barbie Doll
(I am off to Hawaii for a post nuptial lei)

Reverend Ruby, can we have a witness?!? Can we have another, Rev?
Brian's younger brother Brad and their great friend Rebecca signed the documents along with that motelier with the mostest to legalize the marriage of the boyz from Lenawee County.

Brad, Ruby, Judy, Len, Lee Ellen, Becky, Amanda and the Neo-Groomz David and Brian,
raise glass to toast the evening and honor our
witness/wedding photographer/Mistress-of-Cermonies, Rebecca Chekouras.
Here! Here!
Where?
The Coral Sands, of Course.

Love has arrived

The festivities have begun. Judy and Len hosted a fabulous dinner at Davey's Hideaway last night, the two grooms are finalizing the ceremony, and Peaches is framing the shots like Francis Ford Coppola.

Missy Calyn, has sent beautiful tropical love flowers to mark tonight's wedding of Brian and David. The lovely CMD was a historical love witness to the boyz "commitment" in Seattle 12 years ago. Tonight she will be with us all here, in our hearts.
